The following is a transcript from Congresswoman Candice Miller’s radio address on Monday, August 17:
This is Congresswoman Candice Miller. The past year in Washington has been very challenging. Last fall I stood against a $700 billion bailout for irresponsible banks on Wall Street whose actions put our entire economy at risk.
Recently we received disturbing news from the Inspector General who oversees the government bailout program. In recent Congressional testimony he reported that the explosion of these bailouts puts the federal taxpayer potentially on the hook for not just $700 billion, but as much as $23 trillion. That is simply unacceptable and must be stopped.
I stood against the $787 billion stimulus plan that has not delivered on promised jobs and simply has added more to our national debt. Recently the House passed a Cap and Trade national energy tax that will drive up energy costs for every family and job provider and force more job losses as manufacturing moves overseas to places like China and India.
I stood against this legislation once and will do so again if it returns from the Senate. I also have serious reservations about a government takeover of our national health care system that forces onerous new taxes on American job providers and will force millions of Americans out of their private health plans.
The common sense of the people of Michigan and America understand that this is the wrong direction. Government bailouts must end. Unspent stimulus funds must be redirected to purposes that will actually create jobs or be returned to the American people.
The national energy tax must be stopped to protect families’ bottom lines and protect American jobs. Health care reform must protect the doctor patient relationship, allow consumers to keep insurance they have, lower costs, and increase access to medical services for all.
By focusing on the needs of American families and small businesses we can put this nation on the road to economic recovery. We can do better and I know that working together in a bipartisan way, we will.
