Rep. Miller on Passage of Health Care Bill in House

by Rob Montilla on November 8, 2009

Washington – Congresswoman Candice Miller released the following statement upon passage of health care reform legislation today in the United States House of Representatives:

“I opposed the health care reform bill on the floor today because it is simply inconceivable to me that in the face of continued job loss in America and with a national unemployment rate over 10% that Democrats in the House of Representatives could pass a 1,990 page $1.3 trillion health care reform bill that is funded with tax increases that will kill more jobs.  The higher taxes and mandates included in this legislation will serve as another hurdle for hard pressed job providers to create the jobs so desperately needed in our economy.

“In addition the legislation we considered today would actually enact incentives that will encourage private employers to end health care coverage for their employees and dump them onto the government plan.  This flies in the face of the rhetoric of President Obama and leading Democrats who have said “If you like the plan you have you can keep it.”

“We can all agree that we must do more to bring down health care costs and expand the availability of coverage for every American, but this plan amounts to a jobs-killing, tax-hiking, deficit-exploding government takeover of our health care system that will only make our problems worse.

“With the passage of this bill Democrats in Washington continue to ignore the demands of the American people that we finally begin to focus on job creation and get a grip on out of control government spending.  The American people deserve better”

It was sad to see that H.R. 3962 passed, but I was proud of how Candice Miller
stood up for our values by opposing this bill. Her one-minute speech on the House floor was the best last Saturday, and I think we all need to thank her for that.
