I attended this meeting after being invited by email. I enjoyed the meeting. The four Clerks in the forum were excellent. After about 5 minutes into the question and answer portion of the panel the quantity of questions dropped. I asked a question of the panel and waited for the response. Another question was asked and answered and then nothing. I asked another question…eventually I asked 5 or 6 questions of the panel. The group had brought 4 clerks there to answer questions, yet none of the members were asking questions. At the end of the meeting, the treasurer stood up to make a statement. He said that he was very upset that non members had occupied the majority of the discussion. (the only discussion was between the panel, so I believe he was referring to the questions) He then said ” In my opinion, non members should sit there, be quiet and listen”.
I was not only amazed that he made the comment, but even more amazed that no one corrected him, not even the Republican State representative who was there to motivate the troops. The beginning of the meeting started out with the need for new members, the urgent need to recruit new members. So here we have new attendees, getting involved and engaging in the process, and the treasurer chastises them for becoming involved in the Republican party meeting. This is such a shame. You spend time and money to advertise meetings hoping new people will attend, and then you allow someone to drive them away by insulting them. If this is the policy-acceptable practice of the North Macomb Committee, then you can lock the doors now. I had hoped to join this group and possible volunteer in projects. I am no longer interested. I understand why the numbers are so low in this group. I see no hope for recruitment of new members, which is a huge concern for all republicans. This next election cycle is even more important than the last. If this next election is to be won by Republicans, it will have to be done in spite of this group. Our only hope for the next election is if this isolated incident never occurs again. I hope you make the necessary changes to prevent this from occurring again.
Thank you ,
Lee Verbouw
