Officials have completed the first step toward chopping the county Board of Commissioners from 26 members to 13, with the Republican and Democratic parties each submitting new district maps.
The redistricting process carries high stakes as the commissioners will battle with colleagues for survival in the upcoming elections.
The Macomb GOP has offered two potential maps that would reapportion the county board, and the Democrats have submitted one. Reapportionment is required because of the downsizing of the board that’s required by the county charter that voters approved in November.
But the Republicans have come out swinging, claiming that the Democrats’ map is a blatant attempt at gerrymandering, with district lines drawn to benefit Democratic candidates in the 2010 elections. Click Here to Read the Full Story

We are in a great position to win at all levels come November. Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana is the latest prominent Democrat choosing retirement rather than face re-election on the Obama platform. Denise Ilitch and Robert Bowman both declined to run for governor of Michigan on the Democratic ticket, leaving the Dems scrambling to find a candidate to beat the strong GOP field. The Republican wave of 2010 is coming and together we will see success here in Macomb County and throughout the State of Michigan. I look forward to working with you every step of the way to victory.
Just a few items for you this Tuesday:
The first phase of the redistricting process will soon be complete. On Wednesday morning, a map will be submitted that is done according to guidelines established by law. The next step is the Redistricting Meeting on March 3, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. in the Board of Commissioners Conference room. The panel will vote to accept one plan and I hope you can attend the meeting to voice your opinion on the maps being presented. I’d like to issue a special thanks to Bob Brandenburg who did a tremendous job in analyzing the population data and recommending redistricting scenarios.
We have two great events coming up for you to attend: “Pizza and Politics with former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson” on Friday, February 26, and “Pancakes and Politics with Congressman Mike Rogers” on Saturday, March 6. Details of both events can be found in the website Events listing, including locations, times and prices. I hope you can attend both of these events. If you have any questions, please contact Jean Uhl at 586-264-1304.
Finally, it is time to run for precinct delegate again. Our team is not complete without you. Precinct Delegates are the most important office in our party and I hope you will consider filling this role. As a Precinct Delegate, you are the voice of the Republican Party in your precinct, allowing your neighbors to hear the message of the party not from talking heads, but from you. Having a strong Precinct Delegate base is critical to Election Day success.
We win in 2010 with you!
I hope you will share your thoughts about these topics or other political challenges we are facing. Please comment on this post below.
Sincerely,
Jared Maynard

Congresswoman Candice Miller
For Immediate Release: February 5, 2010
Contact: Erin Sayago, 202-226-4709
WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today requested U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to testify before the House Homeland Security Committee on his decision to Mirandize Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Christmas Day terrorist. Congresswoman Miller, the only member from Michigan on the House Homeland Security Committee, sent a letter to Chairman Bennie Thompson (MS-02) and Ranking Member Peter King (NY-03) asking them to quickly schedule a hearing to hear testimony from A.G. Holder on the actions of the Justice Department following the incident onboard Northwest Flight 253 and the status and operations of the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group (HIG).
“As the only member of the Homeland Security Committee from Michigan, this terrorist attack hit close to home,” said Miller. “Our nation was fortunate that this attack did not succeed, and I believe it is vitally important this committee uses its Congressional oversight to review the actions taken by the federal government once the terrorist was in custody. This is why this committee needs to hear directly from Attorney General Holder.” [Click to Read the Full Post…]
