Rep. Miller Signs Declaration of Health Care Independence

by From the Office of Candice Miller on February 21, 2010

Candice Miller

Congresswoman Candice Miller

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today joined her colleagues in signing the Declaration of Health Care Independence. This declaration is a commitment made by members of Congress to protect the rights of every American citizen when making decisions on their health care.

Congresswoman Miller said:

“As a representative of the people, I have a responsibility to uphold each and every American’s rights. This is especially important when dealing with something as significant as a person’s health care. It is unacceptable to be crafting our nation’s health care reform behind closed doors, especially when President Obama and the Democratic Majority in Congress promised the American people transparency. Additionally, it is unacceptable to impose massive new spending and new taxes on individuals and employers through federal-government mandates which will require the purchase of health care or cause individuals to pay a huge tax and possibly face criminal penalties.” [Click to Read the Full Post…]

Lund and Meltzer: Dear Governor – No More Taxes

by Rob Montilla on February 21, 2010

From the Offices of State Representatives Pete Lund and Kim Meltzer:

After seven years in office, the governor finally managed to get Lansing leaders to all agree on one thing:  her idea to expand the state sales tax is a bad one.

While it was no surprise that the governor presented her executive budget with a tax increase, it is a disappointment.  The governor’s proposed tax hike includes a sales tax expansion in exchange for lowering the business taxes — a move she calls “revenue neutral.” This “revenue neutral” tax shift is the world’s first half-a-billion dollar “revenue neutral” tax hike.

The last time she tried to expand the sales tax in 2007, the government shut down and the unemployment rate has since doubled. Her proposal also relies on hundreds of millions in federal stimulus dollars that we may or may not receive. [Click to Read the Full Post…]

By Chad Selweski, Macomb Daily Staff Writer

Officials have completed the first step toward chopping the county Board of Commissioners from 26 members to 13, with the Republican and Democratic parties each submitting new district maps.

The redistricting process carries high stakes as the commissioners will battle with colleagues for survival in the upcoming elections.

The Macomb GOP has offered two potential maps that would reapportion the county board, and the Democrats have submitted one. Reapportionment is required because of the downsizing of the board that’s required by the county charter that voters approved in November.

But the Republicans have come out swinging, claiming that the Democrats’ map is a blatant attempt at gerrymandering, with district lines drawn to benefit Democratic candidates in the 2010 elections. Click Here to Read the Full Story
