In January, Reince Priebus was elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee. As Chairman of the RNC, Reince has pledged to unite the Republican Party behind a solid business plan to restore faith in Republican donors and communicate to the American public to reach our common goal – electing Republicans.

A successful chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, Reince created the framework that brought about one of the most historic election cycles Wisconsin has ever experienced. During Reince’s tenure, Republicans in Wisconsin not only defeated Russ Feingold by electing citizen legislator Ron Johnson to the Senate, but they gained two additional U.S. House seats, won the Governor’s office, took back both the state Assembly and the state Senate and defeated the leaders of both of those chambers.

U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today praised the U.S. House of Representatives passage of the Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act (H.R. 1230). This measure would require the Department of the Interior (DOI) to conduct offshore oil and gas lease sales and allow our nation to get back on track with energy exploration, produce additional energy resources domestically and help reduce the price of gasoline at the pump.

“Today, every American is being hurt by ever escalating prices at the pump and rising energy prices threatening our economic recovery and the creation of new jobs. We simply cannot continue to delay or cancel the increased production of domestic energy and exploration. As energy costs continue to skyrocket, it hurts household budgets and small business and the Obama Administration has not recognized the urgency to act on solutions to bring down fuel prices and leverage our domestic energy resources to bring those prices down and create jobs,” Miller said…

A resolution calling on Congress to fully fund the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter was introduced in the Michigan Senate Tuesday, said sponsor Sen. Jack Brandenburg, R-Harrison Township.

“The F-35 program creates advanced-technology jobs that build a highly skilled workforce essential to our national security and economic prosperity here in Michigan,” Brandenburg said. “We need this program to be fully funded for our country’s safety and the workers who depend on these jobs.”

According to Brandenburg, the F-35 is the most advanced fighter aircraft ever built and is needed to replace the aging fleet of military aircraft that has been in use for 30 years. The United States has invested in the production of the F-35 for more than a decade and will lose the benefits of the investment if full funding and planned production are not continued.

“Senator Carl Levin and our other leaders in Congress need to recognize the importance of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to Michigan, the country and our allies around the world and fully fund the program,” Brandenburg said.

Residents from all over southeast Michigan gathered Monday evening at MacRay Banquet and Event Center in Harrison Township to voice their thoughts and concerns over the government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), as well as hear presentations from various state and federal agencies.

The event, organized by State Representative Anthony Forlini (R-Harrison Township), included members of the state’s House Committee on Natural Resources, Tourism and Recreation, along with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S Army Corps of Engineers, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and U.S. Rep. Candice Miller.

“I think FEMA needed to know that people are upset,” Forlini said. “They weren’t getting the message. I think they got the message today.”

Plans for a water trail along Lake St. Clair are expected to be completed this summer, MSU Extension and Michigan Sea Grant officials told the Board of Commissioners’ Economic Development Committee Thursday.

The trail, which will be suited for all levels of open water kayaking and other paddling sports, will link to existing water trails in both Wayne and St. Clair counties and complete a state-wide system. Development of the concept began last year with a $10,000 grant from Michigan Sea Grant to the Lake St. Clair Tourism Development Program, and should be complete some time in August. In the meantime, two focus groups will be held for both paddling enthusiasts and marina operators in early May, and a public comment session will be held later that month.

In Macomb County, the trail provides an additional outlet for lakefront communities to use their locale as a point of attraction and business development, said co-chair of the Economic Development Committee, Commissioner James Carabelli.

“Just like the lake, the coastline is a built-in economic development tool, and we should be doing all we can to take advantage of the opportunities it presents,” Carabelli said. “I am pleased to see the project coming together.”

State Rep. Jeff Farrington today expressed his disappointment with House Democrats who blocked a resolution that would have saved the state $11.4 million by rescinding health benefits to roommates of state employees and their dependents.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 9 rescinds the increase in rates of compensation recommended by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) with the intention of eliminating the extension of health benefits to adults and their dependents living with but not related to a classified employee.  Their multi-million-dollar decision comes while residents in the private sector are seeing their health care benefits diminish.

”These unprecedented efforts by the CSC and the Democrats that supported this irresponsible benefits package chose to side with unelected bureaucrats instead of the voice of the people,” said Farrington, R-Utica.  “Those who blocked our common-sense effort to restore fiscal sanity find it easy to put politics before the taxpaying families of Michigan.  I invite them both to join the rest of our state in becoming part of the solution for the future, not the problems of the past.”

SCR 9 needed a two-thirds vote for approval.  The measure failed by a vote of 66 ‘yes’ and 41 ‘no’ votes.

First of all, let me thank all of you for your firm commitment to the conservative values we all share.  During the campaign last fall I signed the Republican Pledge to America in which I promised that I would vote to reduce domestic discretionary spending by $100 billion below the level requested by President Obama in his fiscal year 2011 budget.  Action was required this year to conclude funding for the fiscal year 2011 budget because last year the Democrat majorities in both the House and Senate failed to introduce, debate r pass a budget to govern spending for the current fiscal year in a complete abdication of their Constitutional responsibilities.  Since October 1, 2010, the beginning of the current fiscal year, the federal government has been operating under short term spending plans called continuing resolutions.  This forced the current Congress to complete the unfinished business of funding our government until September 2011.

I took the commitment I made in the Pledge to America seriously and have throughout this process maintained that commitment as we tried to work with the Senate and President Obama to negotiate spending cuts that are so desperately needed in this nation.  I voted for two Continuing Resolutions (CR) that lasted a total of five weeks and cut $10 billion, or $2 billion a week, which is in line with the commitment I made in the Pledge to America.  I believe strongly that short term funding bills are a bad way to run the government so after the recent three week CR I stated that we must conclude the process primarily because of the difficulty faced by our troops in field defending our liberty when the funding that need is so uncertain…
